Imagining No Heaven Only Easy If You Can Imagine This-Worldy Utopia

Imagine there's no heaven
It's easy if you try
                       - John Lennon, Imagine

Imagining there's no heaven has become remarkably easy for modern people, many self-identified Christians included.

Why it is easy for self-proclaimed materialists and atheists to reject the reality of heaven is simple enough to understand. Why the same is also easy for Christians becomes a bit trickier and the subject of another post.

John Lennon got one thing right in his insipid communist utopia anthem— the unreality of heaven is easy to imagine, but only if one can imagine the reality of creating a brotherhood of man utopia where hunger, greed, and killing are all eradicated by the world living as one.

In this sense, imagining no heaven offers some potential solutions to this-worldly problems; however, it does not and cannot address death.

And what happens if one can imagine neither heaven nor this-worldly utopia? What then?

I suppose you could downgrade the utopia from a worldly scale to a more individual scale and strive to carve out your personal heaven-on-earth amidst the backdrop of the much more encompassing not-heaven-on-earth.

However, what happens if the grand this-worldly utopia makers actively destroy and deny your chance at your individual heaven on earth in favor of their more global plan?

What are you left with then? Well, the three D's—destruction, despair, and death—and not much else, I'm afraid.

If Zdzisław Beksiński's oeuvre of mostly untitled nightmare visions attests to anything, it attests to the despondency of imagining no other-worldly heaven and the peril of imagining only a this-worldly one.

As you note; the problem with all earthly utopias is not just that they do not, will not and cannot actually happen (because of evil) - but that there is death - or, as I term it, "entropy".

I have read so many people who cast word spells trying to deny the significance of disease, degenerations, ageing, death - and the inevitability of change and loss - but these facts were apparently known in their implications to the most ancient recorded thinkers - and their ultimate significance cannot be eliminated by word spells.

When we are fortunate to be living in a kind of temporary utopia (such as being young, healthy, successful, and in love - for instance) - then we should remember that there is always a shadow of inevitable loss - inner knowledge that this is a transitory state - and that we shall forget and or memories be distorted by the workings of "entropy".

So, no matter how idealized this earthly mortal life might become - it can never be enough, while there is entropy. Entropy makes everything nothing or warped, given time.

@ Bruce - The conventional answer to inevitable entropy/change/loss at the individual level is the continuation of the utopia for future generations, but history has amply shown that this is false. On the contrary, mass-level utopias sometimes degenerate faster than individual lives. A person born during the Soviet Revolution may have lived long enough to see the demise of the CCCP. Even moderate political/religious social structures decay or change over time. Raising your children in a stable Christian society (these no longer exist anywhere, but for the sake of argument) is no guarantee that your grandchildren or great-grandchildren will enjoy or even want(!) the same.

Political utopias aside, I think the larger point, unaddressed here, is that Christians need to get out of the utopia/make the world a better place mindset and focus on what needs to be focused on.
